I use the implants manufactured by Straumman almost exclusively in my practice. One of the major reasons for this it that these products have a foundation in research by the International Team for Implantology, a separate and independant research team from the Straumann company. I personally know and have worked with many members of this team and hold their work in the highest regard as does Straumann. No product makes it to market without extensive testing by this team and when it does come on market I can trust what the company says about the performance of the product.
For me there are three other major reasons for using ITI implants.
The biomechanical design of the ITI transcutaneous implant results in the strongest junction of implant to abutment (a Morris taper) and places the stress of function (at the bone crest) away from the implant abutment interface.
The research done on the surface characteristics of the implant have allowed restoration of the SLA surface at six weeks after placement. For simple single tooth replacement this is an incredibly easy route to function for the patient.
Straumann has placed a premium on the design of restorative components to make cementable crowns the norm and to make restoration as easy as possible. In a simple single tooth (or even two teeth next to each other) restoration, it is possible for the restorative dentist to make an impression of the presenting abutment (we place almost all our abutments) in less than twenty minutes of chair time. There is no anesthesia, no prep and no cord to pack.
