    Background

    Dr. David Richards received a Doctorate of Dental Science (DDS) from the University of Iowa in Iowa City. He obtained specialist training in Periodontology at the University of Conneticut and then entered a post-graduate research program to obtain a PhD in Oral Biology.

    He continued to pursue his interest in teaching and dental research as Assistant Professor in the Department of Stomatology at the University of California in San Francisco. During this period Dr. Richards maintained a productive research program and an active clinical practice. His research focused on understanding the biological processes that underlie periodontal disease. Through his work in clinical practice and experience with students and patients in the Dental School, Dr. Richards refined the skills necessary from him to establish a state-of-the-art periodontal practice.

    Dr. Richards is an active member of the local chapter of the California Dental Association, the San Diego County Dental Society (SDCDS).  He is a member of the editorial board and past editor of the monthly Newsletter Facets winning a national award from the American Association for Dental Editors for his work.  He is also the society historian and a member of the San Diego Dental Health Foundation Board, the charitable arm of the SDCDS.  He is a member of the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) and editor of the quarterly newsletter for the California chapter.  Dr. Richards feels it is important to contibute time to promote the field of dentistry to benefit the general public and expand the knowledge and abilities of the dental community.
